Every "best poster size" guide on the first page of Google is written by a printer or a frame shop, and they all do the same thing: hand you a table of sizes with a sentence about each one. That table tells you what exists. It does not tell you what to pick, and it never tells you whether the file you already have is big enough to print at that size.

The type-size column is not an estimate. Those are the published legibility figures from UC Davis's research poster design handout: 30 pt to be legible at 6 feet, 48 pt at 10 feet, 60 pt at 12 feet, 72 pt at 14 feet. If your body copy is smaller than the number in that row, the poster is the wrong size for the room — or the copy is too long for the poster.

Read the 150 DPI column first — it is the realistic target for most posters read from 6 feet or more, and it is where AI-generated files actually land.
The 30-second check before you commit to a size. Do this before you design, not after:
- Note your generator's output resolution (short edge in pixels).

- Divide. That is your maximum honest print size.

Digital destinations do not have a "size" in the print sense. They have an aspect ratio and a minimum resolution, and the platform will crop anything that falls outside it.
For paid placements, use the platform's published numbers rather than a blog's summary. Meta's ads guide for Instagram Feed image ads specifies a 4:5 ratio at a recommended 1440 × 1800 px, with a 500 px minimum width. That single spec covers the majority of Instagram and Facebook feed placements.

Best Poster Size for Conference and Research Posters
Academic posters are the one case where you do not choose the size at all. The conference chooses it, and the number changes by event.
Two families dominate. In North America, 36 × 48 in (Arch E) is the common requirement. Internationally, A0 — 84.1 × 118.9 cm, or 33.1 × 46.8 in — is the default, following the ISO 216 paper standard.
But the orientation requirement is where submissions actually get rejected. IPAC26's poster guidelines accept either A0 or 36 × 48 in Arch E and state plainly that presenters should avoid landscape orientation for those formats, because a landscape poster is too wide for the boards — which measure 100 cm wide by 200 cm high at that event. Look at what the major print chains actually stock.
